With their lightweight design and customizable dimensions, they provide timeless charm while ensuring sustainability and durability for any space.
What are Wood Box Beams?
Box beams, also known as hollow beams, ceiling beams, or faux beams, are carefully constructed to replicate the look of solid beams. These beams are made by assembling two, three, or four sides (or "skins") of solid wood, depending on their intended placement and use. They are commonly used as architectural elements for ceilings, walls, or even door casings, adding visual appeal and charm to a space.
Box beams are not designed to provide structural support but serve purely decorative purposes. Here's how they differ based on their construction:
Types of Box Beams
- 2-Sided Box Beams (Corner Box Beams)
- 3-Sided Box Beams ("U"-Shaped Beams)
- 4-Sided Box Beams (Fully Enclosed Beams)
Key Features of Box Beams
- Lightweight Design: Easier to install than solid wood beams.
- Customizable: Can be tailored to fit specific dimensions or aesthetic preferences.
- Versatile Use: Suitable for ceilings, walls, door casings, or as columns.
Box beams offer the beauty and elegance of solid beams without the added weight or complexity of installation, making them a favorite for enhancing architectural spaces.
Crafting with Antique Reclaimed Barn Wood: Bringing Your Vision to Life
To create a box beam, we work from the inside dimensions outward, as they are typically mounted to a board or blocks secured to the ceiling. The box beam wraps around these fixtures and is then nailed in place to secure it. Using the interior dimensions as a starting point, we build outward to achieve the final thickness according to your specifications.
Each box beam is handmade, and like the reclaimed timber they are crafted from, no two are exactly alike. While the box beams for your project will coordinate beautifully, they won’t be identical—this would defeat the purpose of the reclaimed wood aesthetic.
Our reclaimed ceiling beams are built using antique reclaimed barn wood beams and barn boards, ensuring they bring unmatched character and charm to your design. Whether you’re looking to hide existing structural supports or simply enhance your room’s aesthetic appeal, box beams are a fantastic option.
Box beams offer the timeless look of solid wood beams with the added benefits of custom sizing and lightweight installation. We craft them to your specifications, offering a variety of styles, including rough sawn, hand-hewn, resawn.
Our handcrafted beams are more than decorative elements—they elevate your design, combining rustic elegance with functional versatility.
What is the difference between hand hewn and rough sawn?
Box beams replicate the look of solid timber but have an improved workability and practicality: they’re uniform in size throughout the length of the beam, are available in any length and width combination, are lighter and easier to install than solid beams.
